One of the most useful tools that you can have in your tool shed is the circular saw. A circular saw is an amazing tool for cutting wood or certain other materials depending on the blade. However, whenever a tool is as popular as the circular saw, it can be very difficult to find the best circular saws for your needs.
To make your purchasing decision a whole lot easier, we are going to be looking at the best circular saws on the market. We have considered a lot of different factors when assembling this list.
If you want to skip the list, we would recommend picking up the Makita HS7600 Circular Saw, 7-1/4″.
A Spotlight On Some of The Best Circular Saws 2020
Best Circular Saws Reviews:
Makita HS7600 Circular Saw, 7-1/4″
We feel that a great way to start off our best circular saws list is by looking at a really great circular saw from a really great manufacturer. Many of you are no doubt familiar with the brand Makita, as they tend to make some pretty high-quality power tools.
A great example of their craftsmanship and dedication to quality is the Makita HS7600 Circular Saw, 7-1/4″. This is a very well-made circular saw that manages to offer top-shelf quality, while not being all that pricey in the grand scheme of things. These qualities, when combined, earn the Makita a spot on this list.
As you would expect from this kind of tool brand, the Makita circular saw is extremely powerful. It boasts a 10.5 amp motor and a total RPM of just under 6000. We will discuss the importance of RPMs later on in our buying guide, but for the sake of clarity let’s explain that quickly. RPM (revolutions per minute) refers to how many times the saw blade makes a complete spin in a single minute.
In this case, a high RPM means that the Makita is capable of cutting through material very quickly. This is true, even if the material happens to be very tough. You are primarily going to be using this on softer woods, but with the right blade and the power output of this saw, you could easily use it on tougher material like hardwood, thin metal, and much more.
Despite being a beast when it comes to power output, the Makita isn’t some overly heavy an overly bulky circular saw. Quite the opposite in fact. If you have ever used a circular saw before, then you will probably be amazed at just how light the Makita is. It is built with fairly lightweight components and it comes in at well under 10 lbs., which is very impressive, to say the least. This makes the circular saw a whole lot easier to use.
Now, given how much we have raved about the Makita, you are probably preparing to hear that the price is quite high. However, the Makita HS7600 Circular Saw, 7-1/4″ is actually fairly reasonably priced. It isn’t the cheapest circular saw out there (or even the cheapest entry on our best circular saws list), but given the quality of the saw, the price is very fair.
- Reasonably priced.
- Fairly powerful.
- Lightweight and easy to use.
- Very accurate.
- Safety button placed in a strange and hard to reach place.
SKILSAW SPT77WML-01 15-Amp 7-1/4-Inch Lightweight Worm Drive Circular Saw
Moving on with our look at the best circular saws, we are going to be taking a look at the SKILSAW SPT77WML-01 15-Amp 7-1/4-Inch Lightweight Worm Drive Circular Saw. We will say right up front that we do think that on balance, this circular saw is a bit on the pricey side. There are certainly much cheaper options out there.
At the same time, we also think that this definitely deserves to be highlighted on this list because of just how well-made this saw is. It hits all the right checkmarks that you want to see when looking for a top-of-the-line circular saw.
First off, as with any circular saw, the first thing that you want to look at is the power output of the saw. The SKILSAW is an extremely powerful circular saw for a few reasons. First and foremost is the powerful electric motor. This circular saw boasts an impressive 15 amp electric motor.
This gives it the necessary juice to cut through some pretty tough material and you can go into just about any job knowing that your circular saw has the juice necessary to handle whatever you throw at it. In addition to the powerful motor, this also boasts a high RPM in the 5000+ range. Again, this helps to make the circular saw a lot more versatile.
This looks like a heavy saw from the outside but trust us when we say that it is surprisingly light. The exterior is made from magnesium, which is a tough, but fairly light material overall. It is definitely light enough to make some pretty accurate cuts. It is also a lot more accurate overall because it has an anti-snag lower guard.
- Surprisingly light.
- Also very durable.
- Good power output.
- A very accurate saw overall.
- Might be a bit pricey for what you get.
DEWALT 20V MAX 7-1/4-Inch Circular Saw with Brake
Having a list of the best power tools (of any kind really) without including DEWALT would be like having a list of the best luxury cars and not including Ferrari. So, naturally at least one review on our best circular saws list has to be of a DEWALT product.
In this case, we are going to be taking a look at the DEWALT 20V MAX 7-1/4-Inch Circular Saw with Brake, Tool Only (DCS570B). DEWALT makes a lot of different products, including various kinds of circular saws, but we feel that of all of them, this is the one that really deserves highlighting just because of how well-made it is and how versatile of a tool it is.
As with all the other reviews on our best circular saws list, let’s start by talking about the most important factor of all, which is power output. On this front, there are two things that need to be mentioned.
The first is the motor on this tool. DEWALT tools are often equipped with a unique brushless motor made by the company. These brushless motors not only enable the tool to have a high power output, but they also tend to last for quite a long time. That is true with the DEWALT 20V MAX 7-1/4-Inch Circular Saw with Brake, Tool Only (DCS570B) as well. It has a brushless motor that both provides for a high RPM output and that should last you for a good long while.
Another very common feature of DEWALT tools is being easy to use. Again, this also applies to this circular saw from them. It has a bunch of helpful features that are designed to both make the user experience more pleasant and your cuts more precise.
- High-quality brushless motor.
- High RPM output.
- Great for precise cuts.
- Simple to use.
- No extras (like a case or battery).
MILWAUKEE M18 Brushless 7-1/4
Milwaukee doesn’t quite have the brand reputation of say DEWALT or Makita, but they do make some pretty good power tools. One such example is the MILWAUKEE M18 Brushless 7-1/4 in. Cir. This is an overall well-made tool that we imagine most handymen wouldn’t mind owning.
Is it perfect? Not at all. In fact, we feel that it could afford to be a bit cheaper. However, it is hard to deny the overall great construction of this circular saw.
First off, the Milwaukee is equipped with a high-quality brushless motor. Now, if you will remember back to another review on our best circular saws list (the review of the DEWALT circular saw) we talked about why this is such a good feature.
Brushless motors not only produce a lot of power, but they are also built to last. So, while this circular saw may be on the pricier side, you are definitely going to get a lot of use out of it.
Outside of its large power output, the MILWAUKEE M18 Brushless 7-1/4 in. Cir is also equipped with a lot of really neat quality of life features. For example, it has some pretty solid metal guard to help guide your
- Comes with a fairly good brushless motor.
- Built to last for a long time.
- Lots of nice quality of life features.
- Enjoyable to use.
- Could be cheaper.
TECCPO Circular Saw with Laser
We understand that not everyone is operating on the same budget or that not everyone uses a circular saw enough to justify investing in a pricey circular saw. So, to end off our best circular saws list, we decided that we would take a look at a more affordable circular saw option.
The TECCPO Circular Saw with Laser is easily the most affordable circular saw on this list and it is probably one of the least expensive options on the market right now (this is especially true if you are only looking at cheap options that also offer at least somewhat decent performance).
There isn’t a whole lot that we can say about the TECCPO Circular Saw with Laser. This is not a bad circular saw by any stretch of the imagination. While the main draw is undoubtedly the low cost, it does offer decent performance overall. It is fairly accurate (especially because of the laser attachment) and it isn’t anything to scoff at power wise. It is a good, budget-friendly option.
- Most affordable option on this list.
- Comes with laser attachment.
- Some concerns about durability.
Circular Saw Buying Guide
If you recall way back to the start of our best circular saws list, we mentioned that one of the biggest problems when it comes to circular saws is that they come in so many different kinds and with so many different specifications that it can be hard to pick out the best ones.
Obviously, things like our best circular saws list can be helpful when it comes to picking out good models, but you aren’t always going to have access to a curated list like ours and it can be helpful to know how to pick out one on your own.
With all this in mind, we wan to introduce you to the second part of our article. As you can probably tell from the name of the section, this is a section that is going to be devoted to going over different things that every handyman, woodcutter, contractor, and DIYer should know when it comes to buying good circular saws.
If you are already fairly experienced when it comes to these tools, then this buying guide isn’t going to be all that new to you. However, if you are still a bit inexperienced when it comes to buying tools, or if you want to brush up on your knowledge, then you should give this buying guide a read.
Corded vs Cordless
The first thing that you need to understand when it comes to circular saws is that, much like most other electric tools, they come in either corded or cordless models.
Also, much like with most other electric tools, each kind of circular saw has its own set of pros and cons that you need to consider. On the surface, you might instantly jump towards the cordless saw because of how much more maneuverable they are, but they do come with some downsides as we are going to show you shortly.
The positive aspects of going cordless are probably pretty obvious to most of you out there. Cordless circular saws are a lot easier to use because they don’t have a big, bulky cord for you to carry around. They are also probably a bit safer because of the lack of a cord.
There is no risk of the cord fraying and causing electrical shocks and there is no risk of you cutting into the cord or anything like that. At the same time, we also have to mention the simple fact that cordless circular saws are simply not going to have the same sort of power output as a corded circular saw.
Why? Well, to put it simply, batteries can’t match the power produced by a good outlet. It’s the same general reason why gas tools are more powerful than electric tools, which is that gas is just a better way of generating power.
Don’t take this to mean that you shouldn’t consider a cordless circular saw if it is right for you. However, you should be aware of the limitations of them and the advantages of corded models. We talked a bit about this already during the course of our best circular saws list, and we actually did feature tools of both kinds on our review list.
Obviously, when it comes to something like a circular saw or any power tool that is designed for cutting, one of your top priorities is going to be power. A power tool that is too weak to reliably cut through whatever it is that you are working on isn’t much use to anyone. That is why you want to ensure that when you are shopping for the best circular saws, that you emphasize power.
As you picked up from our review list, power can be measured in a few different ways. One of the key measurements to keep an eye out for is RPM. This stands for revolutions per minute and it is one of the key ways that the power of spinning tools is measured.
At the same time, power isn’t solely determined by the tool itself, you also have to consider the blade that is being used. Blade quality and type have a massive influence on the overall performance and cutting power of a saw. This is true regardless of what kind of saw that it is you are dealing with. It can be circular saws, table saws, miter saws, or any other kind of saw. Blade choice is equally as important.
We probably don’t have to actually tell you this, but for the sake of completeness, we should probably explain that you definitely don’t want to undervalue safety when shopping for a circular saw. They aren’t the most dangerous tool out there, but a lot of things can go wrong when using one and you want to make sure that both you, and those around you, are well-protected.
One particularly important safety feature is the blade guard, which keeps the blade guarded when not in use. This feature alone can really help to save some lives.
Something else to keep an eye on is a feature that automatically stops the saw if it senses that it is jammed or trying to cut through a very tough piece of material. This prevents the circular saw from malfunctioning.
